From the top of Mt. Tarawera to the bottom of Te Wairoa

About 126 years ago during the month of June, the colossal eruption of Mt. Tarawera destroyed several villages in New Zealand. One community; however, was saved, although in a unique and miraculous way. Te Wairoa, or the "Buried Village," as most have come to know it, is a living museum that provides a firsthand account of the events that occurred. During your locum tenens assignment in New Zealand, be sure to check out this remarkable site that offers an inside look into one of Aotearoa's most important historical events.The inhabitants of the formerly prosperous village spent much time excavating the town and transforming it into a one-of-a-kind attraction for curious visitors. You can venture along scenic trails that connect many of the buried buildings and village homes, many of which are open for indoor tours as well. For those who want a more informative tour, experienced guides offer in-depth tours of the village. Most of these leaders are descendants of the people who inhabited the village, which makes the experience not only enlightening but emotional as well.
After touring the existing - and often underground - buildings, you can step inside the renowned Te Wairoa museum, which showcases hundreds of dug-up ruins from the village, including wooden carvings, kitchen supplies and old bottles found among the wreckage.
