11. Do I qualify to work with Global Medical?
1. Where in the U.S. do you work?
Global Medical works throughout the U.S. and its territories. We also work outside of the U.S. in Australia, New Zealand and, on occasion, in other countries.
2. Do you need to be licensed in each state?
In most cases, yes. The exception to this are federal facilities, like military bases, where any current, unrestricted state medical license that you hold will enable you to legally practice medicine. When needed, Global Medical will assist you to secure a state medical license for the state in which you would like to work. While requirements vary from state to state, the minimum requirement for state medical licensure are that you have completed a three year residency in an approved United States training program.
3. How long are the assignments?
Our assignments vary quite widely in length. While most assignments are range from a few weeks to several months in duration, we also have much shorter and much longer assignments. Some physicians work with us one week or weekend a month and other taking assignments lasting years in duration. We’d be happy to learn more about your availability and see if we can put an assignment or schedule of assignments together for you.
Please note that if you reside in Australia, in order for us begin the registration and immigration process, an Area of Need status should be established with the Health Department in your state or territory.
4. What is a typical work week?
Most positions require a full-time (40 hour per week) commitment but again, it depends on the position. Before any of our doctors is asked to make a firm commitment to cover a practice, we provide him or her with a description of the practice that includes information on the regular volume of work along with the average hours that can be expected in the practice. This gives you the control to select the assignments that fit your interests and schedule. Should you accept a position with a practice where more than forty hours per week of work or on-call duties are involved, you will receive premium pay for providing these services.
5. Can I bring my family?
Yes. On longer terms assignments, we are often able to negotiate to have spousal airfare covered. We’re also happy to see if we can help to obtain more larger housing that is suitable for a family. Just let us know who you are traveling with and we will work to secure the best range of options for you.
6. Can I bring my pets?
Yes, but because pets often require a special deposit at apartments and hotels, you will be responsible for placing and retrieving this deposit.
7. What is your malpractice insurance coverage like?
Global Medical’s medical liability coverage comes from Medical Protective, which is a AAA rated insurer (the highest rating possible) and part of the Berkshire Hathaway family of companies. The policy is occurrence based and carries individual limits for each doctor of $1 million per claim and $3 million dollars aggregate.
8. How often do you pay your doctors?
We pay all of doctors twice monthly. Physicians on assignment fax or email their time sheets to our accounting department on 1st and the 15th of each month. Funds are then deposited directly into each doctor’s account within two business days.
9. Are taxes taken out of my paycheck?
No. All of our physicians work as independent sub-contractors. As independent sub-contractors each doctor is responsible for managing and paying his or her own taxes.
10. Can I stay permanently?
Yes, in fact, many of facilities that we work with are looking for permanent staff and are using locum tenens doctors to manage the practice workload while a permanent candidate is being sought. This makes locum tenens assignments a very good way to ‘try-out’ different practices and choose the one that ‘fits’ you best.
