Do I Qualify? Both Australia and New Zealand are willing to accept doctors from highly developed medical systems that mirror the sophistication and breadth of the Australian and New Zealand Medical Systems. Officially, this means any doctors whose medical school is listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools. Unofficially, however, only doctors with recent, extensive post-graduate training or experience (3 years or more) in Western Europe, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong are being accepted by hospitals and practices Down Under. Basic Qualifications
To qualify for a visa and medical registration in Australia and New Zealand, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:
Be actively training or working in their respective field for at least 30 hours per week during 24 of the past 36 months.
Be currently licensed to practice as a physician or surgeon in their country of residence.
- Be in good standing (no sanctions, letters of reprimand, etc.) with medical licensing boards, the legal system and the hospitals where they have practiced.
- Be either board certified or eligible, a Fellow of The Royal College, or in possession of equivalent qualifications (such as the Fachartz, etc.). Note: this does not apply to candidates who are looking for House Officer or Registrar posts.
Osteopaths Some hospitals in New Zealand will accept United States trained Doctors of Osteopathy. These candidates must have obtained their osteopathic degrees from a medical school listed in either the WHO Directory of Medical Schools or the ECFMG Faimer Directory, and meet the above qualifications.
