Global Medical Staffing
Pioneers of the Locum Tenens Industry
(and all-around nice folks)

Our story

During the 1990's, most of the facilities Global Medical Staffing (GMS) now serves were finding it next to impossible to recruit doctors to their facilities – which were in under-serviced areas throughout Australia. Desperate to find qualified doctors, the President of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia got the notion to ask industry experts in the U.S. for some help. Which he did.

Unfortunately, most of the experts who were asked for help were too busy making money in the U.S. and didn't seem terribly interested in figuring out how to recruit doctors for the Aussies. The few who did consider it discovered rather quickly that everyone – from the bureaucrats to the Australians themselves – said it couldn't be done.

We proved them wrong

The first doctors we sent to Australia were U.S. and Canadian doctors who were eager to add some spice to their career and get away from the humdrum of their daily work life. They saw it as an opportunity to take a working sabbatical Down Under. Plus, it was an exciting adventure!

[Pause for effect]

Imagine that, GMS was actually able to recruit, and carefully screen, well-trained medical doctors who were willing to work in under-serviced areas and were excited about the cultural exchange.

Word of mouth spread.

Requests from facilities came with increasing frequency.

Before long, GMS was placing doctors all across the Land of Oz, then New Zealand and beyond.

Jump to current day

Since 1994, GMS has placed nearly 3,000 top-caliber doctors in facilities throughout Australia and New Zealand, as well as the United States and its territories, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

We actively recruit doctors from the U.S., Canada and Europe; though we have also recruited doctors from such far-flung areas as South Africa and Singapore. In fact, we now partner with a pool of over 60,000 physicians worldwide.

Key Players

Meet our beloved Chief Operating Officer, Alan Lakomski - the man who (with a lot of help) breathed life into the locum tenens industry. Alan began his career as a medical recruiter and rapidly rose to become the director of recruiting. In those days, he was responsible for managing over forty fine individuals who, under his direction, recruited over 300 doctors per month.

Alan has staffed for positions in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Antarctica, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Saudi Arabia and the United States. He's rather well-traveled himself and holds an MBA and bunch of other necessary professional stuff. What we find really interesting, however, is that he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (to fledgling credit unions) in Cameroon, West Africa and still speaks the Pidgin language as unintelligibly as the natives. Gud Nyus Fo ol Pipul!

All hail Bob Stringham, our esteemed Chief Executive Officer. We needed Bob to figure out all the money stuff. As if the bureaucratic red tape of medical licensing and all that folderol wasn’t enough, we had to figure out how to pay our physicians in Australian Dollars, then NZD, and so on. But bigger than all of it, Bob had to figure out the tax ramifications. Eee gad.

An expert in international taxation, Bob worked with Price Waterhouse as a consultant before joining forces with Alan to form GMS. We’re sure glad, because it was Bob who established the financial and banking arrangements for us, which removed much of the complexity of international locums. He even managed to structure many GMS assignments under existing tax treaties to produce significant tax benefits. You know, the ones we all hope to find?

When he’s not working, health and fitness is Bob’s thing. He runs marathons, all those races with a ‘K’ in the name, and circles around all of us. In fact, he was recently awarded Top Fit Business Executive in the over 50 category by Utah Business Magazine. Feel the burn.
